Naim NAC 202 and NAP 200 – A Classic British Pre/Power Amplifier Combination

The Naim NAC 202 and NAP 200 combination is designed for music lovers who value rhythm, dynamics and a coherent system architecture more than an extensive list of secondary features. The NAC 202 handles source selection and volume control, while the NAP 200 provides the current and power required to drive the loudspeakers with confidence.

Housing the preamplifier and power amplifier in separate enclosures helps isolate the NAC 202's sensitive low-level circuitry from the high-current output stage and substantial power supply of the NAP 200. The two components were designed as natural partners, creating a focused, musically engaging system with a clear upgrade path.

Their classic black enclosures, green illumination, distinctive three-part fascias and understated controls give the pair an unmistakable Naim appearance. Behind this restrained design lies a carefully developed modular system that can be expanded with dedicated external power supplies.

NAC 202 – A Purely Analogue Preamplifier

The NAC 202 is a fully analogue line-level preamplifier. It does not contain a built-in DAC, network player, phono stage or headphone amplifier. Instead, its design concentrates on source selection, volume control and preserving the integrity of the analogue signal.

Its star-earthed circuit boards and low-resonance internal layout are intended to reduce unwanted electrical and mechanical interference. Input sensitivity is 75 mV, input impedance is 47 kΩ and the main output level is 0.775 V, allowing the NAC 202 to work naturally with the matching NAP 200 and other compatible Naim power amplifiers.

The large control on the left adjusts the volume and is motorised for remote operation. The buttons on the right provide direct access to six sources, as well as mono and mute functions. Operation remains immediate and intuitive, without unnecessary menus or complex display systems.

Six Inputs and Flexible Source Assignment

The NAC 202 provides six source inputs for components such as a CD player, tuner, recorder, AV processor, streamer, external DAC or other line-level source. Its traditional Naim DIN connections are complemented by alternative stereo RCA inputs for the CD and AUX 2 source positions.

The RCA and DIN connections assigned to the same input cannot be used simultaneously, but the selected connection type can be programmed according to the system. This makes the NAC 202 compatible with both traditional Naim sources and conventional hi-fi components using RCA outputs.

Naim favours DIN connectivity because it allows signal channels, signal earth and, where applicable, power to be carried through a single purpose-designed cable. This approach supports consistent grounding and helps reduce unnecessary connections in a complete Naim system.

The NAC 202 also provides recording facilities and a programmable unity-gain AV bypass. The latter allows it to be integrated into a home-cinema system, where a surround processor can control the front-channel volume while the NAC 202 and NAP 200 drive the main loudspeakers.

Direct Power for an External Phono Stage

The NAC 202 does not contain an internal phono stage, but its AUX 2 DIN connection can supply power to a compatible Naim StageLine or SuperLine phono preamplifier.

This modular approach allows the phono stage to be selected according to the cartridge and turntable, while avoiding an additional basic power adapter in the system. The NAC 202 can therefore become the centre of a serious analogue setup without incorporating circuitry that may not be required by every owner.

NAP 200 – 70 Watts with Serious Dynamic Reserves

The NAP 200 delivers 70 watts per channel into an 8-ohm load. Its 300 VA transient power rating indicates that the amplifier is capable of supplying considerably greater power during short musical peaks than its continuous output figure alone might suggest.

The amplifier provides +29 dB of gain, an input impedance of 18 kΩ and a wide frequency response extending from 2 Hz to 65 kHz at the –3 dB points. Its high-current output stage and carefully regulated power supply are designed to produce fast transients, convincing dynamics and controlled loudspeaker drive.

A single DIN connection carries the audio signal from the NAC 202 to the NAP 200 while also supplying 24 V/0.3 A to the preamplifier. This means the two components can operate as a complete system without requiring a separate main power supply for the NAC 202 in their standard configuration.

NAPSC and Naim's Upgradeable Power-Supply System

In the basic system, the NAC 202 receives its main operating power from the NAP 200 through the DIN connection. A separate NAPSC power supply can be used for the preamplifier's control and display circuitry, keeping these sections electrically isolated from the sensitive audio circuits.

The system can later be upgraded with a Naim HiCap or SuperCap. In this configuration, the analogue stages of the NAC 202 receive power from the dedicated external supply, while the music signal is routed to the NAP 200 through the same system.

This modular architecture is an important part of Naim's design philosophy. It allows the owner to improve the system gradually without replacing the NAC 202 or NAP 200, making the combination a strong foundation for a long-term hi-fi system.

A Coherent System with Simple Controls

Despite its sophisticated internal design, the NAC 202 and NAP 200 remain refreshingly straightforward to use. Volume, source selection, mute and mono functions are controlled from the NAC 202, while the NAP 200 requires only its power switch during everyday operation.

Remote control and automatic input switching are available with compatible Naim source components. There are no tone controls, digital signal processing modes, sound effects or complicated menus. The pair is designed to perform a focused task: to preserve and amplify the music signal as directly as possible.

Both components measure 432 mm wide, 87 mm high and 314 mm deep, creating a visually coordinated system. The NAC 202 weighs approximately 7 kilograms, while the NAP 200 weighs 11.6 kilograms.

Positioning and Cabling

For optimum performance, Naim recommends placing the components on dedicated shelves rather than stacking them directly on top of one another. Although the two units may be shown stacked in product photographs, separate support helps reduce mechanical interference and allows appropriate ventilation.

The NAP 200 uses Naim-style loudspeaker connectors and should be partnered with NACA5 or another technically suitable speaker cable with low capacitance and appropriate inductance. Cable selection is part of the amplifier's intended electrical environment and can influence both stability and sound quality.

Before reconnecting cables, the NAP 200 should be switched off and left for at least one minute. Naim DIN cables may also be directional, so their markings should be observed during installation.

Who Is It For?

The Naim NAC 202 and NAP 200 combination is an excellent choice for listeners who prefer a dedicated, upgradeable and purely analogue pre/power amplifier system to an all-in-one integrated amplifier. It can serve as the central amplification platform for a CD player, external DAC, network player, tuner or turntable equipped with a suitable external phono stage.

The NAP 200 has sufficient power and dynamic reserves for a wide range of standmount and floorstanding loudspeakers. Its 300 VA transient capability suggests greater real-world authority than the nominal 70-watt rating might imply, although careful loudspeaker and cable matching remains important.

For existing Naim owners, the pair fits naturally into the brand's modular system philosophy. For newcomers, it provides a clear path towards future improvements through NAPSC, HiCap or SuperCap power supplies.

The NAC 202 and NAP 200 are not designed to impress through an excessive number of functions. Their appeal lies in focused analogue engineering, direct operation and the carefully matched relationship between the two components. Together, they form a distinctive British amplifier system designed around musical timing, dynamic expression and long-term upgradeability.
