When the digital input is used, the incoming signal does not need to pass through another analogue-to-digital conversion stage. Within the limitations of the supported format and applicable copy-management rules, material from a compatible digital source can be recorded directly onto DAT.
The digital outputs also allow the machine to be connected to an external DAC. This provides the option of using a modern converter instead of the internal 20-bit A.S.L.C. stage while retaining the DTR-2000 as a precision DAT transport.
The presence of both coaxial and optical interfaces remains practical today, as it makes the recorder easier to integrate into both vintage and modern digital systems.
Recording and Editing Functions
An important advantage of the DAT format is its ability to store subcode information alongside the audio signal. Start ID markers can identify the beginning of individual recordings, allowing the machine to locate tracks quickly.
The DTR-2000 provides fast direct and skip-search functions, together with track searching based on recorded Start ID markers. This makes navigating a long tape considerably more convenient than with a conventional analogue cassette deck.
Digital fade-in and fade-out functions allow the beginning and end of recordings made through the analogue inputs to be adjusted smoothly. This is particularly useful when archiving radio programmes, concert recordings or personally compiled material.
The recorder also follows the SCMS, or Serial Copy Management System, standard. This was the domestic digital-copying system of the period. It generally permits a first-generation digital copy while restricting further digital duplication in certain circumstances.
Display and Operation
The central feature of the DTR-2000's front panel is its large red multifunction display. Alongside recording level, it indicates transport status, counter information, sampling frequency and the condition of various digital functions.
The cassette compartment is positioned on the left, while the principal transport controls and recording-level knob are located on the right. The layout is logical and easy to understand, with the most important functions directly accessible without navigating a menu system.
The recorder can also be operated with a Denon RC-409 infrared remote control. Because the availability of the remote cannot be assumed with every pre-owned example, its inclusion should be checked separately.
